India is now very close to getting a permanent seat in the UNO. Most countries are in favor of India. They know how strong a contender India is. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India's bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations is a step that he feels is moving in a “positive direction”. He said a 'developed India' will have many faces and expressions and the UNSC will be “one of them”. In his inaugural address at an event organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Delhi, Jaishankar said people have a choice whether the 'Indian vehicle' goes in fourth gear or fifth gear or reverse gear.

In his address, he also emphasised on how India and the Narendra Modi government handled the situation during the Covid-19 pandemic. He said the prime minister at the time, the government at the time, took a “serious, sober approach” to the challenge. Jaishankar also gave the example of the situation that started four years ago in eastern Ladakh and how India responded to it. He said people often tell him one thing, 'governments change but foreign policy doesn't.' He said, “All foreign ministers have to listen to this. It's like we don't count. We are doing it on 'auto-pilot'. And, I tell people. This is actually not true.

Foreign Minister gave the example of Balakot

“See the government's response to the 26/11 terrorist attacks in Mumbai and our government's response to Uri and Balakot,” Jaishankar said. And there will be a price to pay for it.” During the dialogue session, Jaishankar was also asked about India's claim for a permanent seat in the UNSC. He said, “I believe that things are moving in a positive direction. There will be people who will oppose it. Because everyone competes, no one wants anyone else to get ahead.

“But if you ask me where it is moving, I think it is moving positively, I think more and more countries today are recognizing how strong India's case is, And more and more countries are recognizing this. The United Nations itself needs reform.
