Assam resident got citizenship under CAA: Amid violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, 50-year-old Dulon Das from Silchar in Assam has become the first Bangladeshi to get Indian citizenship in Assam with the help of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). India's Home Ministry on Tuesday informed Dulon Das that he has been granted citizenship. He was ordered to go to the Regional Passport Office in Guwahati to get the certificate.

According to Dulos Das's lawyers, he applied for Indian citizenship on April 1, 2024 with the help of CAA. Born in 1974 in Sylhet district of Bangladesh, Dulon and his family fled to Assam in 1988, fed up with the attacks on minorities in the country. In 1986, Das's father bought land in a village in Sylhet district of Bangladesh by spending 8000 baht (Bangladeshi currency). But after several attacks, he left the country and came to India. More than 300 people have been given citizenship under CAA.

CAA for Bangladeshis living in India after 1971

Dulan Das has been voting in Assam in India since 1996 and his family has Aadhaar cards, bank accounts and all other documents. Lawyers said they have not applied for NRC. But Dasan applied for citizenship under CAA after coming to Assam after 1971.

8 people applied under CAA

A total of eight people have applied for citizenship under CAA in Assam so far. Two of these have withdrawn their applications. On Tuesday, lawyer Dharmendra Deb told local journalists that after two applications were withdrawn, six applications under CAA are being reviewed by the Home Ministry. Four others are expected to get citizenship soon.

Application volume is currently dry

The central government had implemented the CAA rule before the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections in March this year. However, very few applications have been received in this segment so far. The BJP has claimed that the number of applicants will increase after the central government starts granting citizenship to local applicants with the help of CAA.
