The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has made it mandatory that the salt, sugar and fat content in any product or product should be displayed in big and bold letters on food packets. For this, a proposal to amend the labelling rules has been approved.
This decision has been taken by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare so that consumers understand the importance of nutritional values in all types of food items and food products and can get information about how much nutritional value they have. The proposal states that the amount of sugar, salt and saturated fat present in the product should be displayed in big and bold letters on the package of each food item. The ministry said that information about the percentage of recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for each food item served will be printed in big and bold letters. In which total sugar content, salt content and saturated fat and sodium content will have to be shown separately.
Change in rules: Misleading things will be banned
Amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations 2020 have been proposed in the 44th meeting of the Food Authority. As per rules 2(v) and 5(3), information about the serving size and nutritional value of the food item should be displayed on the label. According to health care and nutrition experts, this decision has been taken to spread awareness among people to eat less products containing more sugar, salt and saturated fat. Steps have been taken to prevent the increase in non-communicable diseases. These measures have been taken after the implementation of this rule so that people stop eating unhealthy foods and increase the intake of healthy foods. FSSAI will also take steps to prevent people from being misled by labelling health drinks as 100 percent fruit juice.
