Increasing blood sugar levels in the body can also cause heart problems, which can increase the risk of stroke.

High blood sugar can also affect your eyes, causing blurring or blindness, called diabetic retinopathy.

How to reduce the risk of complications in diabetes?
Dr. Varun Suryadevara says, “Many health problems caused by diabetes can be prevented or avoided. Maintaining proper blood sugar levels in the body (less than 7% HbA1c), controlling blood pressure (140/90 mm Hg) and maintaining cholesterol levels. These are important aspects of diabetes management (A1C, BP, cholesterol) and keeping within target ranges to prevent complications of diabetes.”
Apart from this, it is also important to follow a healthy lifestyle to treat diabetes. For this, it is important that you include a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins in your diet. All diabetics should exercise regularly to control blood sugar levels, which will help maintain a healthy weight.
How to know about the problems caused by diabetes?
Regular testing and screening is very important for early detection of diabetic problems. Early symptoms of retinopathy can be detected with an eye examination and should be done annually. Excretion of albumin in urine can help detect kidney disease. Regular examination of the feet can detect problems related to blood circulation or nerve damage. While regular dental checkups can help detect problems related to gums and teeth. ECG, treadmill test should be done to rule out blood pressure, cholesterol and other heart related risks.
