Flood in Afghanistan: Heavy rains and subsequent sudden floods in Afghanistan have wreaked havoc in many districts. So far, more than 300 people have died and thousands of houses have been damaged. Thousands of families have become homeless and thousands of animals have also died. According to the United Nations Food Agency, people are facing food shortage due to floods. A large-scale humanitarian crisis has arisen.

According to reports, a total of 5996 families have been affected by floods in 10 districts of Baghlan province located in the north of the country. Out of these, the houses of 3995 families have been completely washed away. 9160 cattle have died due to floods, while 19070 acres of land has been submerged.

The dead included at least 51 children, according to UNICEF, one of several international aid groups. The World Health Organization has sent 7 tons of medicines and emergency kits to the flood victims. Aid group Save the Children said about 6 lakh people live in five districts of Baghlan, which have been severely affected by the floods. They have dispatched “clinics on wheels” with mobile health and child protection teams to help children and their families.

Local official Hedayatullah Hamdard told AFP news agency that emergency workers, including the military, were searching for victims under mud and debris. Families who lost their homes were given tents, blankets and food. The main road connecting Kabul with northern Afghanistan is closed.

Officials said heavy rains caused widespread damage in Baghlan, Takhar and Badakhshan provinces, as well as Western Ghor and Herat provinces. The country struggles with poverty and is heavily dependent on agriculture.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that we express our solidarity with the people of Afghanistan and our condolences to the families of the victims. His spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said the United Nations was working with local authorities to provide assistance.
