Geneva, 30 October. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) has mourned the death of 19-year-old Italian athlete Matilde Lorenzi, who died after suffering serious injuries during training.
“We are deeply saddened by the death of Matilde Lorenzi,” the FIS said in a statement Tuesday. “FIS joins in mourning with FIS President Flavio Roda and the entire Italian winter sports community, including coaches, athletes, teammates, the Federal Council and all FISI employees.”
Lorenzi fell on the hard piste on the Schnalstal glacier in Tyrol, Italy, on Monday. She was immediately taken to hospital by helicopter, but did not survive due to serious injuries and died a day later.
Lorenzi was one of Italy's rising talents, finishing sixth in downhill and eighth in super-G at the FIS Junior World Ski Championships in France in February.
