Mumbai: Badlapur police and railway police have registered four separate cases in connection with the violent agitation on Tuesday against the sexual abuse of a kindergarten student in a school in Badlapur. More than 500 people have been accused in these complaints. 72 people have been arrested on the basis of CCTV footage and other video recordings. The number of arrests may still increase. A total of 17 personnel, including two local police officers and eight railway policemen, were injured in the stone pelting on Tuesday. Many agitators were also injured. Internet service has been shut down in Badlapur since yesterday evening. Police force was removed from various places in the city today amid heavy tension. The city remained calm today, although most schools remained closed.

Last week, Akshay Shinde, a sweeper, sexually assaulted two girls at a school in Badlapur. Upset by this incident, the residents of Badlapur protested yesterday. They vandalised the school. A train roko aandolan was organised at the station. Stones were pelted at police personnel. The police resorted to lathicharge to remove the agitators from the railway track.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sudhakar Pathare said on Wednesday that internet services have been suspended in Badlapur following the violence. Internet services will be restored after reviewing the situation here. At least 17 policemen, including two city officials, were injured in the stone pelting. And three FIRs were registered for assault, damage to public property, violation of prohibitory orders, among other charges. The injured policemen are being treated at local hospitals. A senior police officer said.

40 people have been arrested in connection with the stone pelting and other crimes and efforts are being made to identify the other accused. The police are examining CCTV and video clippings, the official added.

GRP Commissioner Dravindr Shispe said that an FIR has been registered in the case of violence at Badalpur railway station and 32 people have been arrested. 7 to 8 railway policemen including an officer were injured in the stone pelting. Today the situation is normal and under control.

Following the incident, the school management suspended the principal, a class cheater and a female attendant. The state government on Tuesday ordered the suspension of three police personnel, including a senior police officer, for negligence in investigating the case.

Others, including women, involved in the agitation vandalised the school's doors, windows etc. Sources said the school is said to be owned by a close relative of a BJP leader from Badlapur.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis yesterday ordered the formation of a special investigation team headed by senior IPS officer Arti Singh.

Ujjwal Nikam, appointed as special officer advocate in the sexual harassment case, condemned the unnecessary delay by the police in registering an FIR in the case.
