According to the Factory Act 1948 in India, companies have to pay minimum wages set by the government. Also, work can be done only for 48 hours in a week. Its duration can be maximum 9 hours per day with a break of 1 hour. However, overtime is paid at double the regular salary.

Dr. Ambedkar laid the foundation of 8 hour working day policy. On 27 November 1942, in the seventh session of the Indian Labor Council in New Delhi, Dr. Ambedkar changed the working hours from 12 hours to 8 hours.
