New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday expressed displeasure over the vacancies in the Central Information Commission and State Information Commissions and ordered the Center to immediately fill the vacancies.
A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice N Koteshwar Singh, while demanding immediate recruitment of Information Commissioners in CIC, told the Center that these posts need to be filled immediately, otherwise if an organization does not have employees then what is the point of its existence?
The bench criticized the appointment of candidates from the same category in CIC and SIC. Justice Surya Kant said that this fact has come before us that the same class of people work in the entire commission.
He further said that why only bureaucrats should be appointed and not people from many fields? We do not want to say much about this but it needs to be considered.
Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for petitioner Anjali Bhardwaj and others, said that in 2019, the Supreme Court had issued original directions for filling up the posts in CIC and SIC. However, states delayed the selection process and circumvented the Right to Information Act.
Bhushan urged the court to summon the concerned secretaries or seek their answers, saying that people using this platform are facing huge difficulties due to vacancies.
