Wakf Board Bill: Two top Muslim organisations, who appeared before the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the Wakf Amendment Bill, strongly opposed the removal of the provision of Wakf by users. A representative of the All India Pasmanda Muslim Mahaz and the All India Muslim Personal Law Board held a meeting with the JPC.

What did you argue?

Mahaja supported the bill and said it would ensure transparency and accountability. They also hoped that it would prove to be an important step towards eliminating corruption and opportunism. The Mahaja delegation said the country should be run by law and not religious texts. They told the committee that the bill does not mention 'Waqf by users' and it should be included in the bill.

Mahaj also demanded inclusion of marginalised Muslims and women in the management committees of Waqf and CAG audit of Waqf properties.

Bill is unconstitutional: Personal Law Board

The Personal Law Board had objected to the provision of the bill, according to which the right to create a Waqf will be given only to a person who has been following the Muslim religion for five years. The board believed that such a provision is unconstitutional and beyond the jurisdiction of Parliament. It would be considered a religious supervision on the members of the community.

The opposition protested

Faizan Mustafa, Vice Chancellor of Chanakya National Law University, Patna, also appeared before the JPC and made some comments on 'one nation, one law' and Uniform Civil Code, which was strongly opposed by the opposition party members. Along with this, BJP and NDA members also questioned some of his arguments. Meanwhile, a heated argument broke out between the BJP MP and some opposition members. A BJP MP also accused the opposition member of misbehavior.
