This scene is the origin of the Sirhind Canal, which has been quenching the thirst of farmers for centuries and delivering grains to their mouths. Since the birth of the Himalayas, the Sutlej has been flowing the same way even today due to the bursting of its snow cover and the water of the broken clouds. After the deep erosion of Bhakra, the second natural wall of the Shivalik Hills was at Rupnagar next to the Sutlej river. Hundreds of years ago, the Sutlej broke this natural wall and left the lap of Maa Saraswati and started flowing into the lap of Sindh. This dam is not only a grand economic plan of modern man, but also an artistic work designed by human hands to flow its water in a systematic manner following the flow of ancient times. Without considering when it was built, who built it, I only mean to consider the flow of colors in this image as a mental relief.
The main scene in this 36×24 inch oil painting is the water overflowing at the mouth of the bridge, which is falling into its banks. In fact, this water changing color every moment is a manifestation of the emotions overflowing in the human mind, which want to maintain the flow of life while facing challenges. The turmoil in the mind of today's man while facing social, economic, political and religious situations is as inexhaustible as the ups and downs of these waters. Come on! Let's look at the journey of life for a moment… The milky white color at the mouth seems to be the pure color of childhood, but after walking a few steps the color has started changing. This is a truth of life…. As soon as the child absorbs the effect of the environment, his behavior changes. The green color of the water in the image is due to the shadow of the huge trees on the left. It is said that water has no color… If seen, the color of the human mind is also not there, both have such a nature… to accept external influences. Children's minds are as pure as raindrops and melted snow, but with time they lose their originality.
Talking about the colours used in this painting, red, yellow and orange are nowhere to be seen. These colours, which symbolize sunlight and fire, are known to be warming. Blue, green and purple are considered to be cool and soothing colours. The effect of green and blue is neutralizing the effect of the dark colours used on the bridge and the wall on the left in front. These bricks and pot stones studded with lime seem to be telling strange stories. As they are saying, we are not the reflection of those walls which remind us of the blood and massacres spilled on the walls of forts. We are constantly striving to deliver life-giving water to the mouths of crores of people. I wish! If the bricks of the harems of the kings had been in the service of humanity for centuries, then today's world would not be living on the hope of the mercy of politicians. If we consider the historical aspect, what is wrong with the bricks, let the executioners come and take the innocents in their hands. Sometimes there are gaps in the walls where they provide protection. The bricks of the Chinese Wall placed on the Berlin Wall are a historical witness to this truth.
These bricks, which appear in the painting in the shape of data with ends, are the same ones that have blocked the water of Sutlej for the last century. This bridge is the only visible evidence of the arena, proving that “after all, water has to pass under bridges.” Behind the bridge, a large reservoir of water at the foot of the hills seems to claim to maintain the continuity of this canal. On a huge platform on the left, there is a small room in the shape of a black circular embankment that covers the entire point. There are a total of thirteen data i.e. gates. Only twelve are visible. The deep black color inside the doors is due to dense shadow. The shine on the pillars outside is giving the feeling of bright sunlight. In bright light, only a part of the ceiling of the room appears in two colors due to shadow.
An interesting aspect of this painting is that I started it from an old photograph. Now this bridge does not look like a painting. A few years ago, the iron gates were opened and closed by hand with the machine seen on the bridge. But now big electric motors have been installed on the bridge. This is also my humble attempt to retain the vintage look. The motif of the painting i.e. the face and forehead was easily made by looking at the photo from the mobile phone. When I zoomed in on the mobile to paint the distant view, it would be so blurred that nothing could be seen clearly. Out of compulsion, I went to that place one morning with my canvas, paint and other stuff. Everything was so clear and natural that for a long time I could only tell this difference. The rows of bricks and stones and the gap between them had now become quite easy to paint. The thing that strengthened me mentally the most while working here was that passersby appreciated my work and asked me about the painting. For many people, painting equipment, paint, brushes, canvas and easel were new things. It was also an unexpected golden opportunity for them to enjoy a scene from the movies visually. One of my fans even put my clip on Instagram, which I found out later. Well, I think it is better to stay away from today's mobile media whirlwind and continue with your creative work.
According to John Berger, author of “Ways of Seeing”, it all depends on how we see things. Artists also make the shapes and colors a little different from the natural scene to make the artwork impressive. But it should not happen that the shape of the painted figure becomes something else. While preparing this painting, my effort has been to accurately depict its romantic scene, but also to match its ancient form with the present situation.
