At present, a big news is coming out from Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh, which is known as the land of history and revolution, which will shock the administration. Thousands of angry farmers under the banner of BKU (Indian Farmers Union) and various farmer organizations have stormed the Meerut Collectorate premises. The anger of the farmers was so high that they forcefully demolished the iron barriers installed by the police for security and went straight to the main gate of the DM office shouting heavy slogans. The farmers have bluntly warned that if the District Magistrate (DM) does not come to the spot and resolve their problems, then they will not allow any officer to sit in his office and will impose an indefinite lock. After this fierce protest, heavy police force has been deployed in Meerut Collectorate and surrounding administrative areas and there is panic.
According to the information received, for the last several weeks, farmers of Meerut and surrounding rural areas had been visiting the local authorities with various demands like payment of sugarcane dues, increased electricity rates, tube well connections, problem of stray animals and fair compensation for the acquired lands. Farmers allege that the officials of the district administration and related departments are only giving false assurances instead of listening to their problems. When no concrete action was taken despite submitting memorandums in administrative meetings several times, the farmers lost their patience and took the historic decision to protest directly at the Meerut Collectorate after the Panchayat. The farmers say that the government and administration are ignoring the farmers, which will not be tolerated any longer.
Since this morning, thousands of farmers from various villages of Meerut started marching towards the Collectorate on tractor-trolleys and bikes. To maintain law and order, the district administration had deployed heavy police force, PAC personnel and strong iron barriers at many places around the Collectorate. As soon as the group of farmers reached the main gate of the Collectorate, the police tried to stop them, leading to a heated argument and scuffle between the two parties. The angry mob razed all the police barriers and razed them to the ground and broke the barricades and entered directly inside the Collectorate premises. During this time the police appeared to be a mute spectator because the number of farmers was so huge that it was not possible to stop them.
After entering the Collectorate premises, the farmers started protesting in the ground itself and raised loud slogans against the district administration. Prominent leaders of the farmers roared from the stage and said that this time they are not going to be satisfied with just paper assurances. He has clearly warned that if the District Magistrate (DM) himself does not come and take the memorandum of the farmers and does not immediately decide on the demands, then the farmers will close all the rooms of the Collectorate and the offices of the officers and will not allow any Babu or officer to enter inside. Seeing this attitude of the farmers, the administration has become helpless and a series of emergency meetings have started among the administrative officials.
After this high-voltage drama, senior administrative officials and Superintendent of Police of Meerut have reached the spot and are trying to pacify the farmer leaders and resolve the matter through talks. However, the farmer leaders are completely adamant on their demands and say that the protest will not be ended until there is a solution in writing and on the spot. This fierce movement of farmers in this major district of Uttar Pradesh has exposed the administrative system of the government. In the coming few hours, it will be very interesting to see what strict steps the district administration takes to deal with this pressure of farmers and what new agreement comes out.
