Resham Singh (55), a farmer protesting at the Shambhu border connecting Haryana and Punjab, committed suicide by consuming poison on Thursday. Resham Singh was a resident of Pahuwind village in Tarn Taran district and was part of the long-running farmers’ movement. This incident has happened when a few days ago another farmer had also committed suicide at the same place.
The protesting farmers say that they were desperate for a permanent solution to the movement and were angry at the central government not paying attention to their demands. This step of Resham Singh has come at a time when farmer leaders are on fast at Khanauri border for the last 45 days. The farmer leader has refused to end his fast unto death despite his ill health.
Farmer leaders at Shambhu border say that this is the second suicide in the last three weeks. Various farmer organizations have demanded the central government to enact a law to guarantee the minimum support price for crops. Farmer leader Tejveer Singh said that Resham Singh was disappointed with the government not resolving the issues of the long-running movement.
Earlier, on December 18, a farmer, Ranjodh Singh, had committed suicide at the same place. Farmers under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border since February 13 last year. Security forces had stopped them from marching to Delhi, after which the agitation is continuing. Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has said that he will not end his fast unto death and his priority is to protect the interests of farmers.
