Famous ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas from 'Chitthi Aayi Hai' passes away

Mumbai: Famous ghazal singer Pankaj Udhas, who sang and made Urdu ghazals resonate in the hearts of music lovers, died today at the age of 72 after a long illness. The Gujarati-speaking ghazal singer took Urdu ghazals to the country and the world during his illustrious career spanning four decades.

Sadagat singer's daughter Nayab gave this sad news. Pankaj Udasan was undergoing treatment after being diagnosed with cancer about six months ago. He breathed his last at 11 am today at Breach-Candy Hospital. He was 73 years old at the time of his death. Sadgat's last rites will be performed tomorrow on Tuesday.

Leaders from across the country, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bollywood celebrities and fans paid tribute to him. People remembered him by playing many of his music videos and ghazals on social media.

Pankaj Udhas decided to follow the footsteps of his elder brother and playback singer Manhar Udhas as a singer. But instead of moving forward in the field of playback singing, he chose the field of Urdu Ghazal singing. For this he learned Urdu from an Urdu language teacher for 14 years. One thing he noticed was that ghazals were sung on the basis of Urdu agharas and classical ragas. Feasts are quite limited.

Born on 17 May 1951 in Jetpur village near Rajkot in Saurashtra, Pankaj Udhas did his schooling in Rajkot. There was already a passion for music in the family. Gradually moving forward he started singing songs of Mukesh and other playback singers. By the time he came to college, elder brother Manhar had already started his career as a playback singer in the Hindi film industry. But to show something new, Pankaj turned to Ghazal. His first ghazal album 'Aahat' was released in 1980. These melodious ghazals with simple tunes were welcomed by music lovers. Then 60 ghazal albums came one after the other. His cousin and famous folklorist Manubhai Gadhvi also helped him come forward.

Ghazals were performed in simple style in national and international festivals to bring Ghazals into the mainstream. Along with this, in the film 'Naam' he presented the ghazal 'Chithi Aayi Hai…' in the role of Pankaj Udhas, this ghazal crossed all limits of popularity.

Pankaj Udhas, who achieved top position in the field of Ghazal singing, was honored with the Padmashree award. He was also honored with many prestigious awards including Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. When the shocking news of Pankaj Udhas' death reached his countless fans across the world, Sahunna Haya was left heartbroken. Only one reaction came out of Sahu's mind that even though Pankaj Udhas is no longer among us, his ghazals will always resonate and make us realize the existence of a soulful singer.
