West Champaran (Bagaha), September 29 (HS). The water level of the historic Gandak Barrage located on the India-Nepal border continues to decline rapidly. Late last Saturday evening, the water level of Gandak Barrage had almost reached 5 lakh 62 thousand 500 cusecs of water. It was feared that the water level would increase further, but due to water acquisition of Nepal and stoppage of rain in the hilly areas. The reason is that the water level of Gandak Barrage started falling since early Sunday morning.
Due to stoppage of rain in the Terai and hilly areas of Nepal and lack of rain water in many small and big mountain rivers meeting Gandak Barrage Triveni, there has been a rapid decline in the water level. Due to which the water level of Gandak Barrage is continuously decreasing. A decline in the water level of Gandak River is being recorded since Sunday.
Naval Kishore Bharti, Superintending Engineer of the Irrigation Department, said that we are in constant touch with the Nepalese authorities through WhatsApp, wireless and mobile. The water level of Gandak River has started falling since early Sunday morning. Despite this, all the engineers and personnel of Gandak Barrage are on full alert. All the gates of Gandak Barrage have been completely lifted. Every activity is being closely monitored. With the rapid decline in the water level of Gandak Barrage, the possibility of erosion in the coastal areas of Gandak River has increased significantly. Due to which there is an atmosphere of panic among the villagers living in the coastal areas.
Urban life was affected due to flooding of Gandak river in many localities of Bagaha city. Due to the flood of Gandak river, Ratwal Chakhani embankment (Champaran embankment) has collapsed near Chakhani, due to which many houses of Chakhani village, Malpurwa and Rahman Nagar locality are seen submerged in water. Water has penetrated up to three to four feet.
Water is flowing up to two feet on National Highway 727 of Malpurwa. The havoc of flood of Gandak river is visible in Anandnagar, Deendayal Nagar, Anand Nagar and Kailashnagar locality of Bagaha city. There is news of water entering the villages across Gandak Diara also.
Bagaha sub-divisional officer Gaurav Kumar has inspected the flood water in various wards of Bagaha city. Kumar Gaurav has instructed the block-cum-zonal officers of the seven blocks of Bagaha sub-division to inspect the flood water that has entered the villages of their respective areas and the revenue employees and Panchayat secretaries to remain in their revenue/panchayat areas. NDRF team has also been activated. An NDRF team has been sent to Chiurahi Panchayat of Madhubani block, where 40 stranded families are being evacuated.
One team has been sent to Bhedihari of Block Bagaha-2 and an NDRF team is being sent to Godiya Patti of Bagaha Nagar.
