Mumbai: Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officials raided two locations in Bhiwandi and seized Rs. Fake medicines worth Rs 1.85 crore were seized. A case has been registered against two people in this matter and further investigation is being done to find out if any inter-state gang is involved in this matter.
According to the information received, a total of eight cases regarding fake medicines have been reported in the last few months. In which it was revealed that these fake medicines were being sold in large quantities in government hospitals also.
According to the incident, the FIDA team, acting on a tip-off, raided a warehouse in Bhiwandi and another unit in Mira Road area. Here the FDA team found fake antibiotics in suspicious quantities.
After this, when the samples of these medicines were tested, they were found to be fake. So the FDA team spent Rs. Fake medicines worth Rs 1.85 crore were seized. Further investigation revealed that these medicines were being sent to different states. Due to which public health was being destroyed.
At Narpoli police station, both the accused were booked under sections 318 (4) (cheating), 276 (adulteration of medicines), 277 (sale of adulterated medicines), 278 (sale of different medicines) and 3 (5) (negligence of medicines). A case was registered under . On Saturday, a case was registered under the Indian Penal Code (a criminal act committed by several persons in furtherance of a common intention) and the Drugs and Cosmetics Act.
The police and FDA conducted further investigation to identify the manufacturing locations, sources of packaging materials and distribution channels of these counterfeit drugs.
