News India Live, Digital Desk: A news has come from Britain which is heart-wrenching and shameful to humanity. An incident of rape of a 20-year-old girl of Indian origin has come to light in Walsall city of West Midlands. Police are investigating the case as not just a sexual assault, but a “racially aggravated hate crime”, meaning the woman was targeted because of her racial identity.
This horrific incident took place on Saturday evening in the Park Hall area of Walsall. West Midlands Police said they had received reports of a woman wandering the streets in distress. When the police reached the spot and started investigation, it was found that an unknown person in a nearby house first attacked her and then committed a heinous act like rape.
Picture of suspect released, search for accused intensified
Seeing the seriousness of the matter, the police took immediate action and started a major search operation to nab the accused. The police have also released a CCTV photograph of the accused, so that people can identify him and help the police. According to the photo released, the suspect is a 30-year-old white man with short hair and was wearing dark-colored clothes at the time of the incident.
Detective Superintendent Ronan Tyrer, who is leading the investigation, described it as “a horrific attack on a young woman”. He said that his team is working day and night to arrest the culprit as soon as possible and bring him to justice.
Fear and anger spread in the community
This incident has shocked the Indians settled in Britain, especially the Punjabi and Sikh communities. Organizations like Sikh Federation UK have said that the victim belongs to the Punjabi community. This incident has further increased the anger and fear of the people as a similar racial attack and rape of a Sikh woman took place in the nearby Oldbury area last month.
Chief Superintendent Phil Dolby of Walsall Police also acknowledged that the attack would create an atmosphere of fear in the local community. He has promised to increase police patrolling in the area to assure people of security. Many British MPs have also strongly condemned this despicable crime, calling it a dangerous mix of racism and misogyny.
Police say that they are not linking this incident with any other case at present, but such repeated incidents raise serious questions on the safety of minorities, especially women, in Britain.
