Extorted Rs 1.12 crore from an elderly person on the pretext of profit in stock market: Youth arrested

Mumbai: A 34-year-old man, who defrauded a senior citizen of Rs 1.12 crore on the pretext of giving high returns on online investments in the stock market, has been arrested by the Cyber ​​Crime Department of Mumbai Police.

An official said that accused Deepak Chavan was arrested from Bandra. Police have recovered Rs 82 lakh deposited in 33 bank accounts.

Accused Chavan had deposited Rs 1.12 crore in various bank accounts with prosecutor Sandeep Deshpande (U.W.68) from December 2023 to last February.

The elderly complainant told the police that in December he had received several WhatsApp messages from different numbers. He was invited to join the share trading group.

Deshpande joined the group. The accused got Deshpande to open a trading account in their name. According to the accused, he had deposited the money in the account. Deshpande was shown getting good returns on investment.

When the victim Deshpande asked for money, the accused asked for advance tax. Eventually he became suspicious and complained to the police. The police traced Chavan with the help of technical evidence and arrested him.
