Ahmedabad: Globally, India holds the leading position in the production of pepper and spices. The average total production in the country is 12.4 million tonnes and only 15 percent of it is exported. Efforts will be made to increase it in future.
National Spices Conference said that there is a huge demand for Indian pepper-spice globally but local supply should be considered first. Ramkumar Menon of the World Spices Organization said, more emphasis will be laid on productivity to meet export demand and efforts will be made to increase production to 15-16 million tonnes by 2030. By 2030, exports will also increase to $10 billion, which is currently $4.5 billion.
During April-September, total exports from the country were Rs 17488 crore, which was Rs 16065 crore in the same period last year. Demand has opened up on a large scale in Europe and America.
