In a recent case study conducted at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, a healthy 12-year-old boy was diagnosed with this rare health condition. In fact, the boy had eaten shrimp salad for lunch before going to play a cricket match with his friends, after which his health started deteriorating 10 minutes later during the match.

What is the FDEIA?

FDEIA is a disorder in which anaphylaxis develops upon physical activity within a few hours of consuming a specific food.

Symptoms of FDEIA

Symptoms can vary but often include hives, abdominal cramps, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or throat, and dizziness or fainting, NCBI reports.

Don't eat these foods before exercise ,

Many different types of foods can cause FDEIA, but primarily these include wheat, shellfish, nuts, tomatoes, peanuts, fish, pork, beef, mushrooms, hazelnuts, eggs, peaches, apples, milk, and alcohol.

Preventive Measures

FDEIA is considered a postprandial phenomenon and patients are advised to avoid exercise for 4 to 6 hours after eating provoking foods, reduce exercise intensity after eating, avoid exercise in extreme temperatures, and carry an epinephrine autoinjector when exercising.
