Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on a fast with his supporters for almost one and a half months at the Khanauri border connecting Haryana and Punjab. Thousands of farmers are standing with them in tents, and have decided to take out a tractor rally on 26 January. However, there is a lack of enthusiasm regarding the farmers’ movement in Haryana, due to which questions are being raised as to why the farmers of Haryana are not joining the movement along with Punjab. Similarly, there is no movement among the farmers of Western Uttar Pradesh. There is no enthusiasm about the movement even in the districts adjoining Punjab like Karnal, Ambala and Kurukshetra.
Due to lack of farmer movement
- Re-election of BJP government:
In the recently held assembly elections, the BJP government in Haryana has again won, which has reduced the enthusiasm of the farmer leaders. - Government Schemes:
Naib Singh Saini’s government has implemented Bhavantar Compensation Scheme and purchase scheme of 24 crops at MSP. Due to this, farmers believe that they are not facing any loss due to reduction in MSP, due to which their indifference towards the movement has increased. - Not being a part of United Kisan Morcha:
It is also being learned that the farmer organizations of Haryana have no active contribution in the movement run by the United Kisan Morcha. An atmosphere of fight for respect is also being seen among farmer leaders. - Positive reaction to government policy:
Some Haryana farmer leaders have praised the policies of the state government, saying that despite there being no law on MSP, the government is trying to compensate. He believes that if all the states take such steps, the pressure on the central government will increase.
Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s fast
Punjab farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal is not ready to break the fast and has even refused treatment. In this situation, many questions are being raised regarding the attitude of Haryana farmers towards participating in the movement.
