London, 27 August (HS). The England Cricket Board (ECB) has announced the English team for the Women's T20 World Cup to be held in the United Arab Emirates in October. Wicketkeeper-batsman Bess Heath, all-rounder Freya Kemp and Danielle Gibson are new faces in the team. Heather Knight will captain the team for the fourth time in the T20 World Cup.
At least 12 members of the 15-member squad selected for the T20 World Cup were part of the England squad at the 2023 T20 World Cup held in South Africa. Lauren Winfield-Hill, Kate Cross and Katherine Sciver-Brunt (retired) are the three players who are not part of the 2024 batch. Gibson was with the squad in 2023, but only as a traveling reserve.
Speaking about the team, captain Knight said, “World Cups are always special events to be involved in as a player and I am really excited about the team we have selected to take charge in the UAE. It is an honor to lead the team. Another World Cup and we are looking forward to the challenges and opportunities ahead.”
Head coach Jon Lewis said, “It has been incredibly difficult and hard to select a squad with this group of players. There are players who have been really unfortunate to have missed out and they will be a big part of what we do for England cricket in the future.”
He said, “I think the 15 players selected give us a very well balanced squad in terms of experience and most importantly the ability to deal with and excel in the conditions we think we will face in the UAE.”
England, who are placed in Group B, will take on Bangladesh on October 5 in their opening match of the competition. They will play South Africa on October 7 before a five-day break. Scotland (October 13) and West Indies (October 15) are their final two group stage assignments. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
England squad for T20 World Cup: Heather Knight (captain), Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Alice Capsey, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Danielle Gibson, Sarah Glenn, Bess Heath, Amy Jones, Freya Kemp, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Linsey Smith, Danni Wyatt.
