After the recent sourness in the relations between India and Maldives, now the relations between the two countries are once again back on track. Despite the tension at the beginning of the tenure of Maldivian President Mohammed Muizzu, warmth in relations is now returning due to economic and diplomatic initiatives. In this episode, Maldives Defense Minister Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon visited India and met Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.
Strong defense cooperation between the two countries
Regional stability and bilateral cooperation were discussed in the delegation level meeting between Rajnath Singh and Defense Minister of Maldives. Singh underlined the special role of Maldives in India’s “Neighbourhood First Policy” and said that both the countries have a joint contribution in ensuring the security of the Indian Ocean region.
Rajnath Singh said:
“India will continue to provide all possible assistance to enhance the defense capabilities of Maldives. “This includes training programmes, joint exercises, supply of defense equipment, and capacity building projects.”
Shared security responsibility in the Indian Ocean
The meeting emphasized the role of both the countries in maintaining safety and security in the Indian Ocean region. The Defense Minister expressed India’s commitment to continue India’s support to the Maldives National Defense Force. He said that India will always stand for the development needs of Maldives and the well-being of its people.
Recent visit of Foreign Minister of Maldives
Ahead of Ghassan Maumoon’s visit, Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Khalil had visited India. During this, he met Foreign Minister S. Talked with Jaishankar. Jaishankar promised cooperation, calling Maldives an excellent example of India’s “Neighbourhood First policy”. He said:
“India will always stand with Maldives and our partnership will further strengthen in various fields.”
New direction in Maldives-India relations
India and Maldives have taken important steps towards deepening mutual cooperation to ensure stability and development in the Indian Ocean region. Focusing on defence, economic cooperation and bilateral projects, this partnership is enhancing not only regional security but also the diplomatic strength of both the countries.
