It is extremely hot in many states of the country. Due to the scorching heat, millions of people are preferring to stay at home during the afternoon. Roads are running smoothly in the afternoon. Electricity consumption is increasing in most states. Due to increase in power consumption the problem of tripping is arising. Amidst this heat wave, there are reports that the power crisis is deepening in some states of the country. This year, there is a possibility of severe heat in the month of June. Due to which it is believed that people will have to face more problems. There is a possibility of power supply disruption in some states in the month of June.
Focus on increasing power generation
The government and the electricity board have laid emphasis on increasing electricity production. Steps have been taken to fully meet the power demand in the coming months including June. Grid India has estimated the maximum night time demand in June to be 235 GW. Out of which there is a plan to generate 187 GW through thermal power and 34 GW through new plants.
Huge decline in hydropower production in the last 40 years
According to government data, the year ending March 31 has seen the biggest decline in hydropower production in the country in the last 40 years. Commissioning of new plants to increase power generation is almost negligible. There is a continuous decline in hydropower production after 2009-10. Steps have been taken to increase power generation by refurbishing existing plants to run at full capacity and restarting closed coal-based plants to generate 5 GW of power.
There was a crisis last year too
Last year also there was power crisis in many states of the country. Due to the extreme heat, shortage of coal and reduction in hydropower production, power crisis arose in many states and it was the government's turn to be active. There were power cuts in many states.
reduction in power generation
Hydroelectric power production in the country has reduced. On the other hand, there is a delay in commissioning of new coal based plants for thermal power generation. The government has started taking steps to save the states from power crisis and ensure maximum power supply. Steps have been taken to increase power generation. Due to which it is expected that the demand for electricity will be met in June, steps have been taken to produce electricity at full capacity in the plant where electricity is currently being produced and to repair the plant. The closed units are being restarted. Delay in commissioning of 3.6 GW of new coal based plants is likely to create power crisis. These new plants were to be commissioned in the month of March itself, but due to insufficient supply of coal it has been delayed. There is a possibility of a reduction of 14 gigawatts in power supply at night in the month of June. The main reason for which is believed to be reduction in the production of solar energy.
