Chandigarh: Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSPCL) has given a big shock to the people. On one hand, people are troubled by power cuts, on the other hand, the commission has increased electricity rates. This increase will put a burden of Rs 654 crore on consumers. The increased rate will be applicable from April 1. That is, old dues will also be recovered from consumers. Not only this, this increase has been done in both domestic and industrial sectors. The number of domestic consumers has increased by 10 paise per 100 units and 12 paise per unit from 101 to 300 units. Similarly, an increase of 15 paise per unit has been made in the industrial sector. Not only this, the electricity given to tube wells has also been increased by 15 paise. This increase will also increase the burden of agricultural subsidy. However, there has been no increase in the electricity rates given to Sri Harmandir Sahib and Durgiana Temple.
Let us tell you that the electricity burden on the Punjab government is sure to increase due to the increase in electricity rates by the commission. Domestic consumers in the state get 600 units of free electricity in two months. Similarly, electricity used in the agricultural sector is also given free to the farmers. In the last financial year, the Punjab government was spending about Rs 20,200 crore on free electricity and the subsidy given on it. The burden of electricity subsidy will also increase due to the increase in electricity rates. It is estimated that Powercom will get an additional Rs 654 crore from the increased rate. This burden will fall on the government only when people use less than 600 units of electricity in two months as before. If people use more than 600 units of electricity in two months, then they will have a burden of Rs 654 crore.
