The results of the recent elections held in Maharashtra and Haryana have once again created controversy regarding EVM (Electronic Voting Machine). Robert Vadra, husband of Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has raised questions about the election results and expressed doubt on the reliability of EVMs.
Why were questions raised on EVM?
After the defeat of Congress and INDIA alliance in Maharashtra and Haryana assembly elections, opposition parties have expressed serious concerns about the transparency of EVMs. Robert Vadra said that from time to time there have been reports of irregularities regarding EVMs, due to which people’s confidence is being lost.
- Question on EVM battery: Vadra claimed that the Election Commission was informed that the results obtained from EVMs with 66% battery were correct, while suspicions of irregularities had arisen regarding the results obtained from EVMs with 99% battery.
- Public’s doubts: Vadra said that the results of Haryana were a surprise for the people, and in such a situation it is natural to raise questions about EVMs.
Alternative to EVM: Demand for ballot paper
Robert Vadra suggested that wherever elections are held in future, ballot paper or some other alternative system should be used.
- Emphasis on ballot paper: He said that public confidence in EVMs has been lost. Therefore, it is important to re-use traditional ballot paper.
- Transparency in power: Vadra also said that maintaining public confidence in the election process is most important.
INDIA alliance’s defeat in Maharashtra and Haryana
The results of Congress and INDIA alliance in Haryana and Maharashtra were contrary to expectations.
- Results against expectations in Haryana: Congress was confident that it would return to power this time, but BJP won for the third consecutive time and formed the government.
- BJP’s landslide victory in Maharashtra: In Maharashtra, BJP and its allies won by a huge margin, while Congress and its alliance parties suffered a huge setback.
Shiv Sena Uddhav faction also raised questions
Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction) leader Aditya Thackeray has also made serious allegations regarding EVM.
- Question on public decision: Aditya Thackeray said that the election results of Maharashtra are not the decision of the public but of EVM.
- Reject results: MVA (Mahavikas Aghadi) alliance parties have rejected the Maharashtra election results.
- Alliance’s Disappointment: There is an atmosphere of frustration in the opposition alliance regarding the results, but they also said that they will face this challenge.
Need to strengthen INDA alliance
Vadra said that INDIA alliance of opposition parties is necessary for the country.
- Ability to defeat BJP: He said that if this alliance remains strong, it can defeat BJP in every state.
- Public Expectations: Vadra believes that the opposition needs to increase its efforts to win public trust.
