New Delhi, June 26 (HS). The election for the post of Speaker in the 18th Lok Sabha will be a litmus test of the unity of the opposition Indi alliance and the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). If needed, there will be division of votes. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded Om Birla. In case of no consensus on the post of Deputy Speaker, the opposition has fielded Congress MP K. Suresh. This election has become a question of prestige for the BJP and the Congress.
The BJP-led NDA has a majority in terms of numbers. The NDA has 293 MPs in its favour. This figure is 21 more than the number required for victory. If Om Birla becomes the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, he will be the first Speaker to get a second term in more than two decades. Birla has become an MP for the third time from Kota, Rajasthan. Born on 23 November 1962, Birla has been a member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly thrice. Suresh is a Congress MP from Mavelikkara Lok Sabha seat of Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. Born on 4 June 1962, Suresh is one of the seniormost members of the Lok Sabha.
