Election Commission's strict instructions to BJP-Congress, star campaigners should speak within decorum

New Delhi, May 22 (HS). The Election Commission has written letters to the presidents of Congress and BJP and given strict instructions on the statements of their star campaigners. The Commission has directed BJP not to speak on communal lines and Congress not to make claims like abolishing the Constitution.

The Election Commission has expressed its concern by writing separate letters to BJP President JP Nadda and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. The Commission has said that the statements of star campaigners should be within limits and they should not contain such things which may have a bad impact on the society after the elections (beyond the period of the code of conduct).

Last month, the Commission had issued notices to the presidents of both the parties regarding the statements of BJP leader Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. The Commission has directed the BJP President to stop all his star campaigners from making statements that divide the society. BJP and its star campaigners should refrain from any campaigning methods or statements based on religious communal basis.

The Election Commission has directed the Congress to ensure that its star campaigners do not spread misconceptions that the Constitution of India can be abolished or sold. Further, Congress star campaigners or candidates should not politicize the Defense Forces and make potentially divisive statements regarding the socio-economic composition of the Defense Forces.

The Commission said that amid technical glitches or exaggerated interpretations of statements by other political parties, star campaigners should ensure that their own content is accurate and the quality of statements made during campaigns does not deteriorate further.
