Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024: The election bugle has sounded in Maharashtra. The Election Commission announced in a press conference yesterday that assembly elections in Maharashtra will be held in a single phase on November 20. Along with this, the Commission also informed about its decision on two demands of NCP.
One demand was accepted and one was rejected
The Election Commission said, “We have accepted Sharad Pawar's request to prominently display his election symbol 'Tutari' on the ballot unit of the EVM. However, the panel rejected the demand to freeze the 'Tuatari' mark.
What did Rajiv Kumar say?
Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar said, 'NCP-SP has informed the Election Commission that our election symbol – 'Tutari' is not prominently displayed on the ballot unit of the EVM. We asked him to explain how he would like his symbol to be displayed on the ballot unit. 'NCP-SP gave us three options regarding the election symbol and we accepted their first suggestion.'
Loss in Lok Sabha due to 'Tutari' election symbol
However, the CEC made it clear that the Commission does not intend to make any changes in the existing system of allotment of election symbols. He also rejected the demand to remove Tutari's election symbol from the list of EVMs. The Sharad Pawar-led party argued that the election symbol of 'Tutari' resembled a 'man playing a trumpet'. Due to which voters became disillusioned during the Lok Sabha elections.
Sharad Pawar's party gave this argument
NCP (Sharad Pawar) argued that the independent candidate who was allotted the election symbol of Tuatari in Satara constituency got more votes than the victory margin of BJP candidate Udayanraj Bhosle.
Udayanraj Bhosle defeated NCP-SP candidate Shashikant Shinde by a margin of 32,771 votes. Independent candidate Sanjay Gade, contesting on the election symbol of Tuatari, got 37,062 votes.
When are the elections in Maharashtra?
Yesterday itself the Election Commission has announced that elections for 288 assembly seats of Maharashtra will be held on 20th November and the results will be declared on 23rd November.
