Ludhiana: A delegation of the Election Commission of India, led by Deputy Election Commissioner Hirdesh Kumar, reviewed the electoral preparations for the Lok Sabha elections-2024 on Friday. Deputy Election Commissioner Hirdesh Kumar was accompanied by Special Expenditure Monitor of Punjab and Haryana B.R. Balakrishnan, Election Commission Secretary Soumyajit Ghosh, Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C, ADGP-cum-State Police Nodal Officer M.F. Farooqui and others.
Deputy Election Commissioner Hirdesh Kumar said that Punjab is a state which has borders on all sides. This includes the international border of Pakistan. Therefore, there is a need to be extra cautious during the Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. The reason for this is that drugs are smuggled from Pakistan through drones.
The Deputy Election Commissioner said that special vigil will have to be kept on the Pakistan border during the elections. Only one week is left for the voting.
During the meeting, the Election Commission of India team met all the election observers, district election officers, police commissioners, zonal commissioners, DIG. Range, senior police captains were instructed to increase vigilance in the districts especially to prevent smuggling of illegal cash, liquor, drugs or free goods from the borders of interstate areas. Apart from this, the Election Commission team also emphasized the need to increase vigilance to stop drone activity near the international border.
The Election Commission team urged the officials to ensure free, fair, peaceful and fear-free elections and encouraged all stakeholders to work together to maintain the integrity of the electoral process. The team directed the District Election Officers to make adequate arrangements for the convenience of voters including fans, coolers, sheds, sweet water, lemonade etc. to ensure maximum polling percentage on polling day June 1 due to heat and ORS packets.
Apart from this, the team also stressed on ensuring the target of more than 70 percent voting. The Election Commission delegation instructed the officials that the voting process should be conducted peacefully and voters should not face any problems at the polling stations. Punjab Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C assured the team that they would ensure smooth and transparent conduct of the elections on June 1.
Deputy Election Commissioner Hirdesh Kumar stressed on conducting the elections in a peaceful and transparent manner and said that it should be ensured that the festival of democracy is celebrated with pomp and show.
