Due to the war-like situation between the Central Asian countries Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, about 100 students who went to Gujarat, mainly from Surat city and district, for higher studies including medicine are stranded there. Five students from Surat and eight from Banaskantha will return. Not only this, their current examinations will be postponed and held in August. Regarding these students, the Chief Secretary of the state Rajkumar contacted the Ministry of External Affairs of the Central Government and the Embassy of Kyrgyzstan and inquired about the arrangements for sending these students safely to their homeland. He has said that about 17 thousand students from all over the country including Gujarat have gone to Kyrgyzstan for medical and other higher education.
Two helpline numbers – 055710041 and 055005538 – have been made operational for 24 hours for Indian students living in Kyrgyzstan to contact the embassy and provide their details. The government list states that airline operations are also operational to bring back the students. The state government has also claimed that the Indian embassy is in constant touch with the universities there and has been asked to make arrangements for the safety of Indian students there.
