Recently, due to the rise in vegetable prices, the inflation rate had crossed 6% in October. However, due to increase in arrival of vegetables during winter, their prices are expected to fall. On the contrary, egg prices are rising across the country due to increased winter demand and increasing exports to countries like Bangladesh.
The price of eggs in Kolkata has increased from ₹6.50 to ₹8 per egg. At the same time, in other parts of the country also the price of eggs has increased from ₹ 7 to ₹ 8 per egg.
Order for export of 5 crore eggs from Bangladesh and Malaysia
West Bengal Poultry Federation says there are several reasons for the increase in egg prices:
- Demand increased in winter
- Rising cost of poultry feed
- Increase in exports to countries like Bangladesh and Malaysia
A total export order of 5 crore eggs has been received from Bangladesh and Malaysia for November and December.
Price of eggs in bulk ₹6.7 per egg
Madan Mohan Maiti, general secretary of West Bengal Poultry Federation, said:
- Wholesale rate: ₹6.7 per egg
- Retail rate: Not to exceed ₹7.5 per egg
However, there is no shortage or crisis of eggs in the country. Egg prices normally rise in winter, but this time the surge is higher.
Cost increased due to shortage of maize
Another major reason for the increase in egg prices is the shortage of corn.
- Demand for maize:
- Due to increased demand for corn at ethanol plants, its supply has decreased.
- Maiti says maize production needs to be increased by 40% or free imports should be allowed.
What is the impact of exports?
When Maiti was asked whether egg prices had increased due to increased exports, he clarified:
- Bangladesh and Malaysia had ordered a total of 5 crore eggs for November-December.
- Only more than 2 crore eggs have been exported so far.
- Bangladesh has started importing eggs from India since September to control rising prices in its domestic market.
- Most of the eggs are exported through the Petrapole-Benapole border.
However, Maiti pointed out that most of the eggs exported do not come from West Bengal, but from other states.
