Mother's milk is considered nectar for the child. It contains antibodies and other essential nutrients that strengthen the child's immune system. This affects not only the child's present but also the future health. In such a situation, every mother is advised to breastfeed for a long time for the better health of her child. But sometimes the mother's milk is not produced in sufficient quantity, so there is no other option left except giving mother's milk to satisfy the child's hunger.
Dr Pallavi Vasal, Clinical Director, Department of Obstetrics & Genetics, Marengo Asia Hospital, Gurugram, explains that breast milk production depends on several factors including general health, hydration and nutrition.
Foods to increase breast milk:
Oats – Oats are rich in iron and fibre and help in the production of breast milk. They provide energy and keep blood sugar under control, which is very important for breastfeeding mothers.
Fenugreek- Fenugreek seeds have been used for centuries to increase breast milk. Breastfeeding women can consume it as a tea or by adding it to food.
Almonds, flax seeds and chia seeds contain fatty acids and proteins that increase breast milk production. In such a situation, if the baby does not get enough mother's milk, then its consumption can be helpful.
Milk and dairy products- Consuming milk and other dairy products helps the body produce more milk, which is produced by increased protein intake. Apart from this, it also provides calcium to the body, which is essential for the mother and the baby.
Millets – These grains not only provide sustained energy levels but are also rich in nutrients. They are easy to digest and help in milk production.
Hydration and a balanced diet are important
Health experts say that adequate hydration is essential for milk production. Breastfeeding mothers should drink plenty of water, herbal teas, and natural juices throughout the day. In addition, it is important to have a balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
