Kolkata, 29 November (HS). Eastern Railway has installed Fire and Smoke Detection System (FSDS) and Fire Detection-cum-Brake System (FDBA) in all air-conditioned (AC) coaches of its long distance trains. The purpose of these modern devices is to further strengthen the safety of passengers.
Kaushik Mitra, Chief Public Relations Officer of Eastern Railway, said on Friday, “This is an advanced system, which can detect even the slightest smoke. The sensors automatically activate and sound an alarm, initiating emergency procedures. If the situation is not under control, the brakes are automatically applied, which stops the train and passengers can be safely evacuated.”
He said that this system remains active continuously during the journey and detects signs of smoke by analyzing air samples. If the risk of fire increases, the FDBA system automatically stops the train. Train staff is alerted through multi-level alarms during this period.
Mitra also informed that in the alert stage an LED light starts flashing on the fire detection panel. When the action is initiated, flasher lights on the panel of the affected coach are activated. The brakes are automatically applied when fire is confirmed. Visual and audible alarms, such as a hooter or buzzer, are triggered 55 seconds after braking.
A senior security department official said that in future this system will be installed in non-AC coaches also. First, preference was given to AC coaches as there is a higher risk of suffocation due to the closed space in them.
He said, “Several steps have been taken to reduce the incidents of fire in running trains. Flammable parts and fittings have been replaced. These advanced devices will remain active 24 hours a day and provide safety assurance to the passengers. Our goal is to make every journey safe and convenient.”
