Earthquake tremors have been felt once again in Chile, a continental country in South America. According to Indian time, these earthquake tremors were felt this morning. The magnitude of this earthquake was recorded at 7.3 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey has given information about this earthquake.
According to the information received, the tremors of this earthquake were felt in Atafagasta, Chile. The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 128 km, 41 km southeast of San Pedro de Ataca city. After the earthquake, people ran out of their homes in fear.
The Ring of Fire causes earthquakes
It is worth noting that Chile is located in the Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean. Earthquakes occur frequently here. In this sequence, an earthquake of 8.8 magnitude in Chile in 2010 caused massive destruction. The earthquake of 8.8 magnitude on the Richter scale caused a tsunami here. Due to which 526 people died. Apart from this, earthquakes keep occurring continuously in Chile. This region is affected by one of the most powerful earthquakes in the world. This also includes the 9.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the southern city of Valdivia in Chile in 1960.
Chile has a dark history when it comes to earthquakes
Apart from this, Chile has a dark history of earthquakes. Thousands of people have lost their lives so far due to earthquakes in Chile. Apart from the devastating earthquakes of 1965 and 2010, Chile has experienced many devastating earthquakes. Some of such earthquakes are as follows-
1965 – 7.4 magnitude earthquake in La Ligua, 400 killed
1971 – A magnitude 7.5 earthquake strikes the Valparaiso region, killing 90 people
1985 – A magnitude 7.8 earthquake strikes off the coast of Valparaiso, killing 177 people.
1998 – Magnitude 7.1 earthquake off coast of northern Chile
2002 – Magnitude 6.6 in Chile-Argentina border region
2003 – Magnitude 6.8 earthquake off coast of central Chile
2004 – Magnitude 6.6 earthquake near Bio-Bio in central Chile

Why do earthquakes occur?
Nowadays, there is an increase in the number of earthquakes in many parts of the country and the world. There are 7 tectonic plates within our earth. These plates constantly move in their place. However, sometimes there is a conflict or friction. Due to this, earthquakes occur on the earth. Due to which common life suffers the most. Buildings collapsed due to the earthquake, resulting in the death of thousands of people.
What are the earthquake zones in India?
According to geologists, about 59 percent of India's total land area is considered earthquake prone. Scientists have divided the earthquake zones in India into 4 parts – Zone-2, Zone-3, Zone-4 and Zone-5. Zone-5 is considered the most sensitive area, while Zone-2 is considered the least sensitive. Our country's capital Delhi falls in earthquake zone-4. Earthquakes of more than 7 magnitude can also occur here, which can cause great devastation.
