Earthquake of 5.6 magnitude hits Turkey, no casualties

Ankara, 18 April (HIST). A strong earthquake of 5.6 magnitude was felt in Turkey on Thursday. The country's disaster management agency gave this information.

According to the disaster management agency, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the city of Sulusarai in Tokat province, about 450 kilometers east of the capital Ankara, razing some buildings to the ground. An officer gave this information. There is no information yet about any casualty. Three weeks ago a powerful earthquake caused massive destruction in the Turkey-Syria region.

The country's disaster management agency said Monday's earthquake was centered in the city of Yesilurt in Malatya province. Yeşilurt Mayor Mehmet Sinar told Haberturk Television that some buildings in the town had collapsed. Malatya was among the 11 provinces of Turkey that were badly affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

The earthquake that occurred on February 6 caused massive devastation in parts of southern Turkey and northern Syria. So far, more than 48,000 people have lost their lives in both the countries due to the earthquake and 1,73,000 buildings in Turkey have been seriously damaged. Turkey's disaster management agency AFAD said about 10,000 aftershocks had hit the region since a powerful earthquake on January 6.
