Earthquake of 5.2 magnitude in Karachi, capital of Sindh province of Pakistan

Karachi, December 16: Karachi, the capital of Pakistan’s Sindh province, and the surrounding areas were shaken by an earthquake late Monday night. Its intensity was measured at 5.2 on the Richter scale. Earthquake tremors were felt in different parts of Karachi. The earthquake caused panic in Chundrigar Road, Sadar, Clifton, Tipu Sultan Road, Pahalwan Goth and Bahria Town.

According to the report of Duniya News, people came out of their homes in panic and started reciting verses from the Holy Quran. There is no news of loss of life or property from any part of Karachi due to the earthquake.

According to the National Earthquake Monitoring Center (Islamabad), the epicenter of the earthquake was 87 kilometers north-west of Karachi at a depth of 12 kilometers. Earlier, an earthquake measuring 3.2 on the Richter scale had occurred in Sibi and its surrounding areas in Balochistan province. The epicenter of the earthquake was 53 km north-west of Sibi at a depth of 11 km.

It is noteworthy that Karachi, located on the coast of the Arabian Sea, is the largest city of Pakistan. It is the major industrial and financial center of Pakistan as well as the main port. It is called the economic capital of Pakistan. After the partition of India, Karachi remained the capital of Pakistan from 1947 to 1959. Later the capital was shifted to Islamabad.
