Earthquake: 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan, 17 dead

A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Hualien, Taiwan's eastern county, on Monday. The earthquake that occurred here on Monday was the most powerful. The capital of Taiwan continued to grapple with the earthquake from overnight till Tuesday morning. The Central Department said that the biggest earthquake here was of 6.3 magnitude which occurred in East Huilian.

According to eyewitnesses in Taipei, two strong tremors were felt at 2.30 am and 12.00 am Indian time. A man living in Taipei's Dan district felt dizzy and felt the entire building shaking as soon as he stepped into the room. They also heard the desk shaking and realized it was an earthquake.

6.3 magnitude earthquake

The Central Meteorological Administration said a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck at 2:26 a.m., followed six minutes later by a magnitude 6.3 quake. The US Geological Survey first put it at 6.1, then 6.0. A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck on April 3, causing landslides and road closures around the mountainous region. In addition, buildings in the main city of Hualien were also badly damaged.

17 people have died in the earthquake

At least 17 people were killed in the earthquake, with the latest bodies found in the mine on 13 April. Early Tuesday, Hualien's fire department said teams had been dispatched to monitor any disasters caused by the new earthquakes. At 2:54 pm they issued a statement saying that no casualties have been reported so far.
