Chandigarh: Due to non-purchase of paddy in Punjab, apart from farmers, commission agents and sheller owners, political opponents have also attacked the government. To avoid opposition from the public, especially the farmers, in the by-elections, the AAP government has changed its strategy and launched a scathing attack on the central government. About half a dozen ministers of the Mann government attacked the central government for not purchasing paddy and said that Punjab was being deliberately given step-motherly treatment. Here it is being told that the United Kisan Morcha has given an ultimatum to the state government to make arrangements for paddy procurement, while the United Kisan Morcha has given four days' time and warned to adopt a strict stance from October 24. On Tuesday, from the Punjab Assembly Speaker to half a dozen ministers attacked the central government. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on phone and demanded to solve the problems of the sheller owners.
Most importantly, the state government was till now requesting the central government to issue rice special to empty the warehouses, but on Tuesday it suddenly changed its strategy. Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, Cabinet Minister Aman Arora, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, Dr. Baljeet Kaur and others visited markets located in different cities and made serious allegations against the Central Government. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, Cabinet Ministers Aman Arora and Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, while talking to journalists here, said that farmers and their crops are getting ruined in the mandis and the Central Government is sitting silent.
Cabinet Minister Cheema Te Arora said that the state government had long ago requested the Central Government to vacate the warehouse, but the Center has a step-motherly attitude towards Punjab. Arora said that it is the responsibility of the central government to take food grains from Punjab because Punjab is buying grains for the Kedar government. Arora said that the Center is retaliating against the protest against the three agricultural laws by the farmers of Punjab. He alleged that the central government wants to hand over Punjab's agriculture to Adani. Now all the hopes of the Punjab government are pinned on the meeting to be held with the Union Ministers tomorrow. Although transportation of grains has started from the warehouses of Punjab, it is not happening as per the requirement.
Food and Civil Supplies Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak said that 13 lakh tonnes of food grains were taken from Punjab last month and 8 lakh tonnes more have been taken till October 21. He said that after the meeting of the shale owners with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, they have also written a letter to the Union Food and Supplies Ministry regarding their problems, but the behavior of the Center has not been favorable so far. He himself has met the Union Food and Civil Supplies Minister.
On the other hand, sheller owners say that they are facing four major problems. Firstly, the warehouses are not empty, where the grains will be stored after milling. Who will be responsible for its loss if it is kept out? The second problem is that after milling the hybrid varieties of paddy, rice is not produced as per the prescribed standards. Sheller owners say that the yield (rice) of one quintal of hybrid variety is 60 kg. The third hybrid type of fodder is breaking down more. Why should sheller owners bear the extra cost of transportation instead of storing the rice in warehouses allotted by the Central Government instead of sending it elsewhere? Punjab Rice Millers Association President Tarsem Saini and Bharat Bhushan Bansal said that we hope that the central government will listen to our demands.
