His father Pandit Mehar Singh Kher was a Kashmiri Pandit and he was also interested in folk songs. At the age of 20-21, he started a handicraft export business with a friend but unfortunately, Kailash and his friend suffered huge losses. After this he went to Rishikesh where he became a Pandit. After reaching there, he felt that he was not fitting in there. Most of his friends were younger than him. In such a situation, differences started arising. After leaving this job also, Kailash Kher felt that he had failed in everything. This disappointed him a lot and he went into depression. During this time, he also took a difficult step like suicide. He jumped into the river Ganga but a person present on the ghat immediately jumped into the Ganga and saved Kailash Kher.

However, despite seeing all the ups and downs in life, Kailash Kher did not give up and worked hard to move forward. Kailash Kher used to sing jingles earlier but then one day he got a chance to sing 'Sufiyaana' in a filmy style. The name of this song was Rabba Ishq Na Hove. Kailash Kher sang this song with full passion and became a superstar overnight. After this, Kailash became famous among the people because of his voice.
