In view of the increasing overcrowding in British jails, the government there has decided to release some prisoners before their sentence ends. The plan to release prisoners will be implemented from September. Thousands of prisoners will be released in the first batch. After this, more prisoners will be released in 18 months. Parliament will be updated every 3 months. Accordingly, the process of further publication will continue.
Britain's prisons are overcrowded, 99 percent full
Have you ever heard of releasing more prisoners than the capacity in a jail? You may not have heard, but something similar is going to happen in Britain. The Labour Party of Britain, which recently came to power with a huge majority, has taken such a decision. Everyone is surprised to hear this. First of all, let us tell you how the British government is going to give a unique free pass to the prisoners.
Thousands of prisoners will soon be released from British jails. This decision has been taken under the leadership of Britain's Justice Minister Shabana Mahmood. The logic behind this is even more interesting. It is being said that there is a problem due to overcrowding in the jails, so the prisoners will be released. Under this scheme, prisoners who have served 40 percent of their sentence will be released.
Under the current law in Britain and Wales, this limit was 50 percent of the sentence, the government has reduced it. This plan to release prisoners will be implemented from September. It is believed that thousands of prisoners will be released in the first batch in early September. After this, more prisoners will be released in the next 18 months. After this, Parliament will be updated about this every 3 months. According to the Ministry of Justice, 4,000 additional male prisoners and about 1,000 female prisoners will be released in the next 18 months.
The most important case
This decision is indeed interesting and in judicial terms, this case is the rarest of the rare. However, one thing is clear about the UK prisoner release scheme that there are some conditions for this release. This means that prisoners serving sentences for serious crimes will not be released.
No prisoner sentenced for 4 years or more will be released, prisoners convicted of serious violent crimes and sexual crimes will be excluded from this scheme. Apart from this, prisoners imprisoned on charges of domestic violence and sentenced to life imprisonment will also not be released.
Justice Minister blamed the previous government
Britain's Justice Minister Shabana Mahmood argues that Britain's previous Conservative government did not resolve the crisis while in power, due to which this decision had to be taken. It had no other option. Last year also, 2000 prisoners had to be released due to lack of space in Britain's jails. Now, for a permanent solution to this problem, construction of new jails and expansion of old jails is considered necessary.
