DRDO will involve private companies in making missiles and bombs, but very strict conditions have been laid down

India’s Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has taken another huge and historic step towards self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in the country’s defense sector. To give a new impetus to defense technology and indigenous weapons manufacturing, DRDO has now taken a big decision to tie up the country’s private sector companies to make state-of-the-art missiles, bombs and other lethal military weapons. However, since it is a matter related to the security and sovereignty of the country, very strict, transparent and strict conditions have been set for the private companies in this entire process, so that there can be no lapse of any kind in the quality and safety standards. This step is going to usher in a new era in India’s defense manufacturing sector.

The goal of private participation and self-reliance in defense production

Till now, the main responsibility of manufacturing missiles, rockets and heavy bombs in India has mostly been with the government defense public sector undertakings (DPSUs) and ordnance factories. But in view of the changing times and the needs of modern warfare, it was felt that to increase the production capacity of the country, it is very important to have the technical efficiency and fast working style of the private sector. Under this new provision of DRDO, Indian private companies will now be able to design, develop and commercial produce state-of-the-art weapons on a large scale in collaboration with the government. The main objective of the government is to reduce the import of defense equipment year after year and make India a major defense exporter country in the world, in which this participation of private companies can prove to be a game-changer.

Strict conditions set by DRDO for private companies

Since the matter is related to the national security of the country, strategic secrets and manufacturing of highly sensitive weapons, DRDO has set stringent criteria and conditions for the selection of private companies. The first condition is that the participating private company must have state-of-the-art manufacturing infrastructure, strong R&D unit and international level safety standards. Additionally, strict rules have been made for foreign-invested or foreign-owned companies to ensure the protection of the country’s strategic secrets. Every company will have to prove that they have strong cyber security arrangements and that the background of the key people on their board is completely trustworthy and transparent.

State-of-the-art missile and bomb manufacturing technology will be transferred

Under this new framework, DRDO will transfer the designs and technology researched by it to eligible private companies (Transfer of Technology – ToT). After this, these companies will manufacture state-of-the-art guided missiles, tactical bombs, and other modern combat equipment for the Indian Army as per the set standards. This process will not only accelerate the production of defense equipment, but will also develop a strong ecosystem for arms manufacturing within the country. DRDO scientists and technical experts will monitor these private projects at every stage so that there is no reduction in quality and firepower and our army gets the best weapons in the world.

Its far-reaching impact on the Indian defense industry and economy

This visionary step of DRDO is having a very positive impact on the Indian economy and defense related stocks in the stock market. Many big private defense companies of the country like Tata Advanced Systems, Larsen & Toubro (L&T), Bharat Forge and Adani Defense are all set to take advantage of this opportunity. This will create new employment opportunities for the youth of the country and India’s self-reliance in the field of technology will be further strengthened. In the coming times, India will not only become self-reliant for its defense needs, but will also emerge as a global leader in exporting Made in India missiles and weapons to other friendly countries of the world.
