Kanpur, 21 May (HS). Deep plowing in summer results in good yield in the upcoming crop. Research results have found that summer plowing has reduced land erosion by 66.5 percent. This information was given by Dr. Khalil Khan, soil scientist of Chandrashekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur on Tuesday.
He told that to get good yield from the upcoming crop, it is beneficial to keep the field vacant in summer season by doing deep plowing immediately after harvesting of Rabi crop. He said that as far as possible, farmers should do deep plowing with soil turning plough. Make sure to do deep plowing in the empty field in the month of May. The clods formed by this deep plowing are gradually broken by wind and rain water. Also, due to ploughing, the crop residue, leaves, roots of plants and weeds growing in the field etc. lying on the surface of the soil go down to the bottom. Which, after rotting, increases the amount of organic fertilizers/organic matter in the soil of the field, thereby increasing the aeration and water holding capacity of the soil.
Due to deep plowing, insects and disease causing bacteria are destroyed due to strong sunlight in summer. Due to summer ploughing, the climate has a smooth effect on the processes taking place in the soil and with the help of air and sunlight, the minerals present in the soil are more easily taken by the plants as food.
He said that farmers should do summer ploughing once in two-three years. Research results have shown that summer ploughing has reduced soil erosion by 66.5 percent.
