New Delhi: Winter has now started showing its true nature. The mercury is in minus on the mountains while it is bone-chilling cold in the plains. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for many parts of the country, where severe weather conditions will be seen in the next few days. At some places there will be a deadly ‘cold wave’ and at other places dense fog will increase the problems of the people.

Let us know what forecast the Meteorological Department has issued for your state.

Icy ‘cold wave’ will prevail in these states

According to IMD, many states of central India may have to face icy winds.

  • There is a possibility of cold wave at isolated places in Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha (Maharashtra), Chhattisgarh and Odisha on 8 and 9 December. Night temperatures will drop rapidly in these areas, which will increase the severity of cold.

These areas will remain wrapped in dense fog, drivers beware!

The biggest danger of winter is fog, which badly affects traffic. IMD has issued a dense fog alert for these states:

  • Western Madhya Pradesh: Dense fog on 8 December.
  • Odisha: Dense fog on 8 and 9 December.
  • Himachal Pradesh: There is a possibility of dense fog during 8th to 10th December.
  • North-eastern states (Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura): These states may see thick blanket of dense fog in the morning from 8 to 12 December.

The department has advised people living in these areas, especially those driving, to be more careful in the morning.

Rain on mountains, storm alert in sea

While cold and fog will increase in the plains, there are also chances of rain at some places.

  • Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Light to moderate rain may occur at some places during December 8 to 10. Also, there is a forecast of rain with thunder, lightning and strong winds at a speed of 30 to 50 kilometers per hour.
  • Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand: Light to moderate rain or snowfall may occur at some places in these hilly states on December 8.

Temperature forecast: Where will the mercury fall?

According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature in Western India (Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra) may fall further by 2 to 3 degrees in the next 3 to 4 days. There is no possibility of any major change in the minimum temperature in the rest of the country.

Overall, the coming few days are going to be cold especially for North and Central India. People are advised to wear warm clothes and take extra caution while traveling, especially in the morning and evening.
