India on Thursday rejected US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu's comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia and its ties with Russia, saying India-Russia relations are long-standing and should be appreciated in a multipolar world.
Responding to a question asked about this in his regular briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India's relations with Russia are long-term based on mutuality of interests. Jaiswal said that in a multipolar world, all countries have freedom of choice. It is necessary for everyone to be aware of and appreciate such realities. It is worth noting that during the proceedings in the US Congress, Donald Lu had questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia and said that India is dependent on Russia for cheap weapons. India buys gas from Russia and that money is used to kill people in Ukraine.
Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lowe told US lawmakers on Tuesday that I agree with you about the symbolism and timing of Prime Minister Modi's visit to Moscow. We are talking to our Indian friends. “If I shed some light on the context of that visit, you can be reassured,” Lu said. Just two weeks before the Moscow visit, Prime Minister Modi met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Italy.
India-Russia relations are not from today but from a long time
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India and Russia have a long-term relationship based on mutual interests. Modi, who went to Italy to attend the G-7 meeting, had met Ukrainian President Zelensky. Therefore, it is not appropriate to question the timing of Prime Minister Modi's visit to Russia. Every country has the freedom to like and dislike each other and it should stick to it. Despite this, America has again shown its misfortune and US Congress Assistant Secretary Donald Lu has raised questions on this.
