The thrill of air travel increases when your journey is comfortable and relaxing. Often people pay attention to only two things while booking flight tickets – either ‘Window Seat’ to see the view outside the window or ‘Aisle Seat’ to get up and down without any hindrance. But did you know that every seat inside the plane has its own unique experience? Choosing the wrong seat can leave you with less legroom, bad smell near the washroom, frequent bumps in the air from passengers, or a seat that doesn’t recline. With a little understanding and proper planning, you can not only make your journey comfortable, but also avoid travel fatigue.
If you are afraid of heights, shaking of the plane or ‘turbulence’ during air travel, then the seats right above the wings of the plane are considered to be the most suitable for you. The center of gravity of the aircraft is located near its wings. When flying through low air pressure or through clouds, the front and rear of the aircraft move the most, while the top of the wings remain the most stable. By sitting in this part, the feeling of shaking is greatly reduced and the journey feels smooth.
For tall passengers, narrow flight seats are no less than a punishment. If you want extra legroom, the ‘Emergency Exit Row’ seats are the best option. There is more space in front of these seats than normal seats. However, keep two things in mind when booking: First, many airlines charge extra for these seats. Second, as per safety regulations, only physically able adults are allowed to sit on these seats so that in case of an emergency, they can help the crew in opening the door. These seats are not allotted to the elderly, pregnant women or families with small children.
If you want peaceful and uninterrupted sleep, then avoid choosing seats at the very rear of the plane i.e. near the toilet and flight attendants’ galley (pantry/kitchen). There is a continuous long queue of passengers near these seats, sounds of doors opening and closing and sometimes there can also be a problem of foul smell. Additionally, the seats in the last row usually do not recline at all due to their proximity to the rear wall, which can lead to back pain on long distance journeys.
If you have a connecting flight or want to be the first one out immediately after landing at the airport without having to wait in line, book Front Cabin seats. Engine noise is also least heard in the front rows, due to which there is peace and you can take a nap comfortably. Additionally, on most airlines, food and beverage service starts in the front, so you’re more likely to get your desired meal.
Check the seatmap given on the airline’s website carefully before deciding on your preferred seat. There are many free websites and apps available on the internet like ‘SeatGuru’ where you can enter your flight number and see the exact map of that particular aircraft. These tools clearly tell you which seats are missing windows, which seats do not recline and which seats lack power sockets or legroom.
