Donated $1 million to IBSA fund to fight poverty and hunger

India is a country which never hesitates to help anyone. He always comes forward to help the needy. At the same time, he has contributed 1 million dollars to fight poverty and hunger. This donation has been given to the fund run by India, Brazil and South Africa.

India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj on Monday presented $1 million to Dima Al-Khatib, Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), as a contribution to poverty alleviation in India, Brazil and South Africa. Handed over a check of Rs. Hunger Alleviation (IBSA) Fund. Kamboj said the focus of India's G20 presidency was on development of the people, by the people and for the people. He said India is committed to supporting the IBSA Fund, as we believe the Fund has positively impacted the lives of millions of people in the Global South. Furthermore, the spirit of South-South cooperation has strengthened.

According to an announcement made by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, India, Brazil and South Africa contribute $1 million annually to the IBSA Fund. Since the establishment of the IBSA Fund in 2004 and its operationalization in 2006, India has contributed more than $1.8 million to the Fund. The United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation serves as the fund's fund manager and secretariat.

What is the function of IBSA Fund?

The IBSA Fund supports projects that aim to promote food security and combat HIV-AIDS, including access to safe drinking water. The Fund has so far allocated $50.6 million, supporting 45 projects in 37 countries in the Global South.

Three projects approved

This year the IBSA Fund has approved three projects, including rural electrification using micro-grids in southern Belize, empowering women and youth for sustainable agriculture in South Sudan and investing in agri-business development in Palestine.

UNOSSC said the fund's board of directors met last month. It approved three proposals for $3 million in new financing for Belize, Palestine and South Sudan. It approved the design of one of the projects in Mali which could be launched in 2024.

A project will increase access to renewable energy in marginalized communities in the Toledo District of Belize. This district has the highest poverty rate in the country.
