In view of the disappointing performance of Indian batsmen in Tests, former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has expressed hope that some players of the current team will turn to domestic cricket. He said he will see whether key players of the Test team remain focused on playing domestic cricket later this month, despite encouragement from coach Gautam Gambhir.

Gavaskar said that the performance of the Indian batsmen at home against New Zealand and in the recently concluded series against Australia has been worrying. India suffered a 0-3 clean sweep against New Zealand at home, while the team suffered a 1-3 defeat in Australia.

Talking to ‘Star Sports’, Gavaskar said, “The next round of Ranji Trophy is on 23rd January. Let’s see how many players of this team play. There should be no excuse for not playing.” He further said, “If you do not play in those matches, then Gautam Gambhir will have to take some tough decisions against players who are not available for Ranji Trophy.”

Gavaskar said, “So I am interested in who plays in the Ranji Trophy matches on January 23. I want to see this. Because at that time there will be T20 matches against England. But those who are not playing T20, will they play Ranji Trophy matches or not?”

Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar said, “Domestic cricket is going to happen in the next 15 days. We’ll find out if what the coaches want has happened, and what the players have done. There are some players who have taken their places for granted, thinking they cannot be dropped. Let’s see whether they listen to the coach and play or not.”
