Doctor’s warning on ‘Ayurvedic hacks’ of social media: Adopting home remedies without thinking can be fatal

In today’s digital and social media era, everyone has started blindly trusting ‘Ayurvedic Hacks’ and home remedies seen on Instagram reels, YouTube shorts and Facebook videos to get rid of minor health problems. Be it a sore throat, mild headache, cold or chronic constipation, people immediately start trying online remedies without consulting any doctor or herbalist or order Ayurvedic medicines indiscriminately from e-commerce platforms and start consuming them. But do you know that this carelessness of yours can become a big curse for your body instead of proving to be a boon? Director of All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA, Delhi) and renowned expert, Dr. Pradeep Kumar Prajapati has given a strong warning saying that self-treatment by looking at social media trends without medical advice can be extremely risky for health.

The biggest mistake is to consider Ayurveda as ‘harmless’: Consuming medicines without knowledge is dangerous.

A very big and false belief has settled in the minds of common people that Ayurveda and herbs do not have any side effects, hence they can be taken in any quantity without doctor’s prescription. Experts say that this thinking is completely wrong. Ayurveda is also a very powerful and scientific system of medicine. If you do not have complete information about the correct dosage of the medicine, its effect and the nature of your disease, then the wrong medicine can cause serious harm to your body instead of benefits. Self-medication of serious chronic diseases like diabetes, blood pressure or thyroid based on incomplete information available on the internet can prove fatal.

Hidden Dangers of Products Sold Online: Metal Poisoning and Dangerous Drug Interactions

Not all Ayurvedic medicines sold on social media or unauthorized e-commerce portals are necessarily of high quality and meet government standards. Many times such products contain some impure substances, heavy metals or chemicals which enter the body and cause serious side effects. Apart from this, many people consider herbs to be completely safe and start consuming them along with their ongoing allopathic or other English medicines, which can lead to dangerous ‘Drug Interaction’. Many times, in the name of earning more profits, traders sell such products whose consumption immediately causes problems like food poisoning, severe allergies, skin rashes or stomach infections.

Ayurveda is the science of living: Understand the rules of daily routine and ‘Ritucharya’

Ayurveda is not just the name of some herbs, but it is a disciplined science of living a complete life, which teaches to establish harmony between our body and mind. In today’s modern and hectic lifestyle, people have completely forgotten the natural rules of sleeping, waking up and eating food on time in the race for career and money. Diseases arise due to the deterioration of this natural biological clock of the body. To stay healthy, it is very important to follow these basic rules of Ayurveda:

  • Get regular sleep: Set a fixed time to sleep and wake up. Lack of sleep increases the incidence of ‘Pitta Dosha’ in the body, which causes problems like hormonal imbalance, migraine, excessive hunger and thirst, hair fall and mental stress.

  • Adopt menstrual cycle: Change your eating routine to suit the change in weather, which is called ‘Ritucharya’ in Ayurveda.

  • Adopt local diet: Give priority to food in your daily diet that is suitable for your geographical area and season.

  • Gut Health and Stress Management: Stress has a direct impact on our intestines (Gut Health). Therefore, learn to control stress through yoga, pranayam and meditation and stay away from physical inactivity and laziness.
