JD(U) reminds NDA of its promises on Bihar: The Janata Dal (United) reminded the BJP-backed NDA government of its promise to grant special status to Bihar. According to sources, in an all-party meeting held before the start of the monsoon session in the House, JDU, a prominent member of the NDA, demanded the Center to grant special state status to Bihar.
On the first day of the monsoon session, state Finance Minister Pankaj Choudhary replied in the Lok Sabha that the report submitted by the inter-ministerial group in 2012 to grant special status to Bihar could not be approved because the necessary factors for it were not proved. Earlier, some states were given special state status by separating them by the NDC on the basis of necessary specific recommendations. In which certain characteristics are considered.
Factors necessary for obtaining special state status
Mountainous and difficult terrain, low population density or significant proportion of tribal population, strategic location on the borders with neighboring countries, economic and infrastructural backwardness and non-viable nature of state finances etc. All the mentioned factors and the unique situation of the state are going to grant the special state status.
Bihar cannot get special state status
Pankaj Chaudhary said that the report submitted by the inter-ministerial group on 30 March 2012 for granting special state status to Bihar was not in accordance with the criteria of NDC. Therefore, it was not given the status of special state.
JDU protested
Regarding the government's statement in the Lok Sabha, JDU sources said that the party is committed to giving special state status to Bihar. If there is any technical problem, then the government should give a special package for the development of Bihar. We make it clear that this alliance has been formed on the promise of giving special state status to Bihar. In the all-party meeting held on July 21, Lok Janshakti Paksha and Rashtriya Janata Dal demanded special state status for Bihar. Similar demands were also made by Biju Janata Dal and YSR Congress Party for states like Odisha and Andhra Pradesh.
Why is it necessary to get special state status?
If a state is granted special status, it gets financial aid, tax concessions and many other benefits from the central government. Special state status is given only for the advancement of the state after considering factors like economic backwardness, geographical challenges and socio-economic disadvantages.
